I just received my TST Wide Screen color monitor yesterday and got it up and running on the bench. Wow! The display is real nice with larger digits and added color. However, I do have a few issues I'd like to report.

  1. The new monitor is now powered by a 5 volt mini plug just like what one uses for their smart phone (Android, not Apple). This presents a challenge as I had the previous 12 volt monochrome monitor's power cord hard wired into the overhead console in my Tundra which was a nice clean installation with no power cord draped across the dash. I spoke with the TST tech last evening who was largely responsible for this new upgrade and he informed me they should have a 12 volt to 5 volt wire conversion coming out soon that should fit in the overhead console. Fortunately, the monitor is supposed to be able to run off it's battery for 5 to 7 days. I may just install it and do without a power cable for now and charge it when parked.
  2. I had a problem trying to see the individual sensors displayed. This is what prompted my call and by the time the tech called back after leaving a message, I had figured out the problem. There is a provision to where one can disable the trailer function which might be useful if disconnected and using the TV to run around checking out sights. Apparently, the new displays are being sent from the factory with the trailer disable function engaged and ergo, no sensors are displayed. Re-engaging the trailer is a simple two button push.
  3. When programming the display to learn the code from each sensor, some of them required repeated attempts to get the display to recognize the particular sensor I was programming into the system. I don't recall the old monochrome display having this problem but it has been a long time.
  4. When programming and scrolling through the various functions, there were a few that weren't even mentioned in the online manual. I asked the tech about what each one does and he said some were non functional. Others such as "trailer ID" don't pertain to my type of usage. The impression I got talking with the tech is that it sounded as if this online manual is a "work in progress" of sorts. It is a new product and maybe being rushed out the door a bit early? Nah.....it looks fabulous and once the quirks are figured out, is mucho better IMHO.

Things I like besides the awesome new display look,

  1. The monitor has a motion sensor inside that allows it to go into sleep mode As soon as the vehicle starts to move, the motion sensor wakes up the monitor. A great feature for conserving battery life.
  2. Gone is the external antenna and in it's place is one that's inside the display. According to the TST tech, this new monitor has much better range and should help eliminate the need for a repeater.
  3. All the buttons have been moved from the top to the front. This is important for folks like myself who mount the monitor right below the rear view mirror. Access is now uninhibited.
  4. The new monitor has the ability to store and utilize sensors for up to 4 separate trailers. This could come in VERY handy if one owns and tows more than one trailer, ie: a boat, travel trailer, utility trailer etc etc. Instead of having to purchase 4 separate monitors, one could simply change the code to whichever trailer is being towed.
  5. The new display should be much easier to see in certain lighting conditions. There were times when the monochrome display was very difficult to read such as mid day sun and sunglasses being worn.
  6. There are more alarms and screen alerts than before.

Here's a side by side photo. Yes, it is a bit larger (the old display is about 2" closer than the new so it appears the same size in the photo) but so what!

So far I'm impressed. It hasn't been road tested yet and that will happen in a few days as we head south to the Buellton rally. I plan to leave both monitors up and running so will be able to directly compare the new to the old and not have to rely on memory.

To be continued......

After repeated attempts to get some sort of special LOA pricing arranged with Mike Benson and no follow up on his end, I've come to the conclusion that he's either too busy or just doesn't want to deal with it. For those who would like to have one of these upgraded displays and not pay full price, I would suggest you call TST direct and tell them you're a Lance Owners of America member and would like the same price you gave to Randy Spiker ($79.00). See what they say.

I REALLY like mine.  Having run both the old and new displays together when we were on our 3 week trip in November, the new display seems to pick up the sensors better and the display is definitely much easier to read.

Hello Randy,

I apologize I was not ignoring you I finally was able to connect with Eric, and get back on the forum. Now that I am on, I can offer a 10% discount to all forum members on the new Color Display or system. Yes it will work with all existing 507 sensors. Any Lance forum member can always contact me directly at 210-420-0132 with any questions.

Thanks,

Mike Benson

@Mike507 , One of my sensors is reading about 10 pounds higher than the actual tire pressure.  I moved it from tire to tire on my truck and it consistently reads higher on tires I know to all be at the same pressure.

One has stopped working completely.   I've swapped new batteries, tested with a VOM for voltage.

Should I send in just the offending sensors or all six of them for calibration? How about the monitor as well?

I've had the color display unit since it was first introduced. The major benefit for me is that you charge the unit and it seems to run forever on the battery.  In fact, one day it stopped working and it finally dawned on me that I hadn't charged it recently.

Not having to plug the monitor in while driving is a major benefit of this product.

Mike

A quick (positive) word on Mike Benson & TST. Having been ( and still am) the “ trail master” in charge of sponsors for LOA ECR’s raffle table Mike has always been the very first one on board with a very generous gift including ( at times ) his personal response! He and all @ TST are AWESOME! Thanks again Mike!

Is this Color wide screen monitor still available by itself?  I already have 8 507’s and just want to upgrade the monitor. I don’t see that option in the LOA store for TST?

Hi Tee,

We have added the color monitor to the LOA Store.  Stock has been ordered and the inventory is on the way to us.

It will be a a couple days until we can ship it to you so if you need it right now, you can get it here on Amazon and get it as soon as March 2nd.  But if you can wait a few days, I would recommend getting it from us

I heard somewhere that to get accurate information when using remote sensors on trailers that the rubber stems needed to be swapped out for metal stems is that correct?

The flow through sensors are not compatible with rubber stems.  If you want to use the flow through sensors then yes you would have to have metal stems.

However, cap sensors will go right on a rubber stems and be very accurate.  We mainly sell the the cap sensors for that reason.  But if you want flow through sensors we do offer those as well.

We also sell just the sensors so if you already have a system and just want new cap sensors, we can do that too.

Let me know what you think...

Having used both the flow-thru and now the cap sensors, I can tell you that the caps are much easier to use. The air flow through the flow-thru was seemingly obstructed and was very slow at accepting air. They stuck out beyond the rim too which meant I had to be very careful not to park to close to a curb or risk breaking off the sensor causing a rapid deflation event. The way I look at it is...with either sensor, the cap must be removed to inflate a tire so why have sensors that require metal stems and have the risk of breaking off if snagged up against a curb. JMHO.

These are now in stock and we can ship as soon as tomorrow.

Ok folks, I finally installed my TST.  I paired the sensors and installed them and everything read great on the display with it cycling from tire to tire. I then turned the unit off and when I turned it back on nothing was displayed.  What am I doing wrong?

Edit: I tried it again and now it’s working, I guess I just have to be patient.

I learned to program my TST system (older color version), I had to disconnect it from the Tow's power.  I have the TST pressure sensors on my Tow and Trailer's tires, even though my Tow has a tire pressure monitoring system--this way all the info is on one monitor, which is located in the bottom left corner of my dash.

Also, get the Sun Shade from tsttruck.com, it will help with the glare.
