2 months ago yesterday we bought a new-to-us truck/TV -
A 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 Extended Cab LTZ (V8, 5.3L, integrated brake controller, factory backup camera, integrated TPMS, remote start, ...), etc ...

I then bought a bed mat -

So last week I asked my fellow LOA'ers about 5th wheel boxes/chests.  As it so happened JamesHB is the ONLY LOA'er who actually has one -

Well, now there are 2 of us in the 5th wheel chest club.

I found what I wanted and then started shopping around.  Found one brand new at WalMart shipped for $329.88 total.  It arrived yesterday.  Had 2 minor dings, but otherwise it is in excellent condition.  I had to make a WalMart account (simple - just email address & a password), but other than that it was quick & easy.  It arrived in 3 days.

It is a DeeZee Red Label Fifth Wheel Utility Chest (DZ8560WB) -

Here is a video review that etrailer.com did on it 3 years ago -

Not much else to say except that I did not want to drill in to the bed of the truck so instead I drilled 2 holes - 1 in each side wall - of the chest so that I could secure it to the front tie-downs of the truck using J-bolts.  I'll re-key it at some point (might match it to the Global core & lock/key of our TT).  It is extremely spacious inside.  I will add some shelving and partitions after we use it for 6 months or so.

Here are some pictures including it engulfing our front porch area upon arrival, various camping items that all fit with the lid closed/latched - including our Westinghouse 2.4K generator, a J-bolt from different angles, etc ... -

Thanks Randy.

Actually, we do miss the SUV.  17 years is a long time with a lot of amazing memories.

We've now had the truck for 2 months & 2 days.  I filled it up with gas the first day and it still has 3/4 of a tank.  So I still can't give an impression on it.  Sure is fancy though with its top-of-the-line features ("Chevy LTZ trim package").  Just not a vehicle that we drive much.

A final wrap-up -

I cannot believe how spacious this 5th wheel chest is!

Everything, but a single ice chest fit in the chest and we are on a trip that has us bringing everything, but the kitchen sink.  Nothing extra in the TT and nothing at all in the truck cab.

3 cases of H2O, half a case of ale, generator, gas can, step stool, bike helmets, baseball gloves, and on and on.  It's like having a trunk in a truck.  Weatherproof and lockable as well.
